National Chemistry Week Kickoff

Research Question:

Which has a higher concentration of acid--balsamic vinegar or pickle juice?

Hypothesis:

The pickle juice has a higher concentration of H+.

Equation:

H+ (aq) + NaHCO3 (s) ----(decomposition of carbonic acid)---> Na+ (aq) + H20 (l) + CO2 (g)

Method:

Lacking litmus paper or a gas capture mechanism, the following method was devised:

Add 10 ml of each to one teaspoon of NaHCO3. Clock the length of time the CO2 is vigorously produced.

Results:

Balsamic vinegar: 8 seconds
Pickle juice: 2 seconds

Conclusion:

Balsamic vinegar has a higher concentration of H+ (is more acidic) than pickle juice. The hypothesis was not confirmed.

Interesting Notes:

The acid appeared to be the limiting reagent in both of these trials. Future experiments could find the precise relative concentration of the acids by determining the amount of each necessary to react fully with the sodium bicarbonate.

Well done, Master Preece. I understand that red cabbage blended in water works as a color indicator, but I've never tried it myself.

I am currently going through balsamic vinegar withdrawl. It is high in sulfites, which is something asthmatics are supposed to avoid. This is very sad to me.
